Conductor Spelling consistently captivates and moves audiences with his ambitious programs. His latest production is the opera *Iphigenia in Aulis* by Gluck (1714–1787), whose 300th birthday will be celebrated in 2014. But this is no ordinary production. The performance featured Wagner’s revised version. After all, Wagner was deeply impressed by the ideas of the great composer Gluck, whom he had come to know through E.T.A. Hoffmann. As he incorporated Gluck’s “dramatic technique using mythological subjects” into his own style, he explored the work’s issues while conducting Gluck’s compositions himself, which ultimately led to the creation of this revised version (I should add that this is a “natural” adaptation—one that respects the original as much as possible while omitting scenes Wagner deemed unnecessary and adding a few musical touches). Furthermore, since the main work flows seamlessly from the overture in Gluck’s original version, this recording also includes the “concert overture” that Wagner arranged to have a distinct “ending.” It is a superb performance, with veteran singers such as Nürnd and Elsner providing solid, cohesive direction throughout.
