Alexei Gorlatch, a young prodigy. Born in Ukraine in 1988, he began studying under M. Hüche at the Berlin University of the Arts at the age of 12. At 19, he performed at Carnegie Hall to great acclaim. He has placed highly in various competitions and, most recently, won first prize at the 2011 Munich International Piano Competition, catapulting him into the spotlight. Prior to that, he won the 2006 Hamamatsu International Piano Competition in Japan and is known for having gained popularity in Japan even before achieving international recognition. This album features Beethoven, the composer in whom he excels most. It includes three hugely popular pieces, starting with the “Pathetique,” and each is a magnificent performance imbued with a freshness as if it were being born into the world for the first time, combined with a sense of solemnity; For example, the heavenly beauty of the second movement of the “Pathétique” leaves one utterly captivated by this young pianist’s extraordinary talent.
