The video was taken from the "Symphonic Twilight" television series conceived in the mid-1960s by Humphrey Burton, then head of music and arts at the BBC Broadcasting Corporation. Two pieces were chosen by Bernstein himself: the Rite of Spring, a work that Stravinsky himself was astonishedly enthusiastic about, and Sibelius' Symphony No. 5, which was Bernstein's favorite symphony. Humphrey Burton was well aware of Bernstein's talents as a conductor and composer, and was instrumental in enhancing his reputation in the UK. So much so that he convinced Bernstein, who was busy as the permanent conductor of the New York Philharmonic and composer of "West Side Story," to perform Mahler's Eighth Symphony with the LSO at the Royal Albert Hall in 1965, a spectacular performance that was broadcast in the U.K. The spectacular performance was broadcast in the U.K.It is no secret that Burton subsequently brought several moving images of Bernstein into the world, and when Bernstein died in 1990, he was a man who knew him well enough to publish a biography four years later.
