This recording features Dvořák (1841–1904), conducted by Andris Nelsons, who is currently regarded as one of the most promising young conductors. Born in Riga, Latvia, in 1978 to parents who were both musicians, he studied piano, trumpet, and voice. He first became principal trumpet with the Latvian National Opera Orchestra, while simultaneously studying conducting under numerous conductors. In particular, he studied conducting under Maris Jansons for nearly 10 years, and there is no doubt that this had a strong influence on his musicality. Starting with his appointment as chief conductor of the Latvian National Opera from 2003 to 2007, he has conducted nearly all of the world’s major orchestras by his mid-30s and is considered a leading candidate for the role of “next chief conductor” at orchestras around the globe. This is his first Dvořák recording, and this live performance was highly acclaimed even within Germany. The performance truly hits all the right notes; for example, the way he brings out the lyrical quality in the second movement of “From the New World” and the sense of elation in the final movement make this interpretation perfect for anyone who thinks, “This is exactly how I want to hear this piece.” Also included on this recording is “Song of a Hero,” Dvořák’s final symphonic poem, composed in 1897. Unlike the other four works, it lacks a clear narrative and shares a similar atmosphere to the works of R. Strauss, depicting a hero who overcomes adversity to achieve glory. It premiered in Vienna on December 4, 1898, under the baton of Gustav Mahler, but it is a rare piece that is rarely performed today. Naxos Japan
