Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) celebrated the 100th anniversary of his birth in 2013. This "War Requiem" is more than just a religious work; it is one of his masterpieces. The score opens with a poem by Wilfred Owen (1893-1918), a poet who lost his life at the age of only 25 in World War I. "My subject is War, and the pity of War. Poetry is in the pity...All a poet can do today is warn. The premiere on May 30, 1962, was a popular masterpiece that received great acclaim from all quarters.In this March 2013 performance, popular American soprano Emily Magee and Mark Padmore, who is regarded as one of the best tenors of our time when it comes to singing this piece, were joined by three soloists: Christian Gerhael, known for his lustrous baritone, and the innocent voice of the Telz Boys Choir. The performance is a perfect blend of orchestral sound and deep prayerful emotion, universalizing the experience of war in the 20th century and carefully depicting a "prayer for peace".
