ICA label's promising new pianist Ingrid Jacobi's Beethoven series, now with Nos. 1 and 3, completes the series. She began her piano studies with Raisa Gorodecka, a pupil of Genrich Neigaus, and at the age of 16 won the highest prize at the St. Louis Conservatory of Music, followed by first prize at the Baldwin Piano Competition and numerous other competitions where she excelled. With numerous recordings to his credit, ICA's Beethoven is also highly acclaimed. Now, the two Beethoven concertos in this issue. The C major concerto, which is numbered No. 1 but was actually composed later than the softly expressive No. 2, is a typically Beethovenian work with extremely heroic and dynamic ideas and a fascinatingly light-hearted theme in the final movement that rolls along. The third concerto, composed in 1800, is in the key of C minor, which gives it a tragic quality.Although written in classical form, this is a masterpiece from the transitional period between the Classical and Romantic periods, with glimpses of romanticism throughout. In these two concertos, Jacobi makes them completely her own, with clear articulation and phrasing, and her unique interpretation and expressiveness.
