Description:
Simone Young's complete collection of Brahms (1833-1897) symphonies is now complete. While at the beginning of the first symphony, she seems to slow down the tempo and sing with great gravity, in the second symphony she approaches with a freshness reminiscent of Mediterranean breezes, bright and cheerful. Perhaps her playing is fundamentally about pursuing fluid and flexible music that follows the ups and downs of emotion rather than emphasizing counterpoint and inner voices. As a result, it may feel "loose" at times to those who expect solidity and structure from German music, but that is about it. It is quite nice to seek pleasure in Brahms. The third is a standout for its fluidity, and the fourth has a sense of distinction from the performances of the past masters. Both are worth listening to. ---I am sure you will enjoy the music as well.
