Description:

Another Major Discovery! The First-Ever Release of a Previously Unreleased Michelangeli Recording! Stereo recording from the Bern Recital on November 2, 1972!! This recital has never been released on any format, not even as a private pressing. This is a previously unreleased recording from the archives of Swiss Radio, known for its technical excellence. Recorded in 1972, at the height of Michelangeli’s career, this album allows you to fully appreciate his virtuosity, expressive range, and powerful presence. Scarlatti’s Sonata in A minor, K. 11, and Sonata in A major, K. 322, are among Michelangeli’s signature repertoire. However, when it comes to live recordings, many are in mono or of poor sound quality, so the arrival of this masterful performance—boasting a dazzling, lustrous quality—is most welcome. The A major sonata, with its particularly melancholic tone, is sure to move you deeply. While Michelangeli is widely regarded as the pianist best suited to Schumann, it is also great news that we can now hear magnificent recordings of “Carnival” and “The Vienna Carnival Jester.” While the 1973 Tokyo live recording of “Carnival” is widely recognized as a breathtaking performance, the live recording from the previous year is also quite impressive. One is moved by his unique expression, which consciously emphasizes the narrative while revealing a passionate outpouring of emotion. As always, the beauty of the passages where the sound fades away is exceptional. In “The Vienna Carnival Jester” as well, his virtuosity is never ostentatious but rather so understated that it symbolizes the nobility of Michelangeli’s artistry. Furthermore, for those who love Michelangeli, I’d like to highlight the encore—from Grieg’s *Lyric Pieces*— “Lullaby.” He also performed this as an encore nine days after this recital, when he performed Grieg’s concerto with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Celibidache. While the brilliance of that performance is legendary, unfortunately, the ARLECCHINO label’s recording was not only in mono but also of extremely poor sound quality. Since the other two studio recordings are all old performances from the 1940s, this disc’s masterful performance is truly moving. It is a dangerous performance in which a sensual allure—rather than simple rural charm—shines mysteriously. The cover photo is a precious image taken by Osamu Tsuji during her first visit to Japan.
