This concert, held on March 18, 1975, had actually been released in several forms as private pressings in the past. LPs featuring Beethoven and Schubert works were released on the DISCOCORP and ROCOCO labels. Two pieces—"Hommage à Rameau" from Debussy’s *Images, Book 1* and "The Bells Ringing Over the Leaves" from *Images, Book 2*—were released on CD by the THEATRE label. Both were unofficial releases, and the sound quality was poor. In this recording of Beethoven’s Bern Recital, the sense of presence is so vivid that it feels as if Michelangeli (ABM) were performing right before your eyes—a truly delightful experience. The beauty of the crystalline tone is magnificent; you can almost see the smooth movement of his hands. ABM’s tone is exceptionally bright. At times, this brightness has been criticized in performances of Beethoven’s works for diminishing the composer’s inherent melancholy. However, when you listen to this performance, you realize that it actually creates a sense of darkness through that very brightness. Indeed, it is the performance created by an artist standing before a live audience that truly embodies the essence of an artist and constitutes a genuine performance. A distinctive feature of ABM’s technique in his Debussy performances is the way the notes fade away. It is as if one were present at the very moment a person draws their last breath. Those passages are unbearably beautiful. One can even picture the audience watching intently as this unfolds. The DG studio recording of Schubert by ABM includes a note stating that he deliberately performed on a piano that was over 60 years old. Given that ABM was exceptionally particular about his pianos, this note is likely not meant to imply any dissatisfaction. So, what does the piano from this Bern recital sound like?
