Heinz Regner, who was hailed as a genius during his lifetime, held prestigious positions from a young age, and passed away suddenly in his early 70s—just when he was poised to reach even greater artistic maturity. His repertoire was extensive, and much of it has been preserved in recordings. His artistic style ranged from refreshingly brisk performances—reminiscent of Schuricht’s approach—that shunned pedantry, to performances characterized by astonishingly slow tempos that relentlessly probed every corner of the music. His tone, too, was elusive and ever-changing—at times a rich, purely German sound, and at others a light, sparkling, Latin-inspired timbre—making him a master of infinite variety. Bruckner was a favorite part of his repertoire, yet even here, he never failed to surprise, revealing a completely different character with each performance. These are essential recordings in this set. The performances of the Fourth and Sixth Symphonies are thrilling and impossible to look away from. The Fifth Symphony features a fast tempo with a strong individual character, yet the overall interpretation remains orthodox. The Seventh Symphony is rendered with a soft and graceful touch. Symphonies No. 8 and No. 9 could be described as radical and shocking performances. With the cooperation of his daughter, Ms. Suzanne Regner, this set includes liner notes by Mr. Dirk Steve, who worked closely with Regner during his lifetime. Tobu Land System
