When it comes to Zanderling’s performance of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 8, the studio recording with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra is the only one available, and it was renowned as a unique, crystal-clear interpretation at a slow tempo. Although Symphony No. 8 was a favorite that the maestro never removed from his repertoire until the very end of his career, no live recording of it had ever been released until now. In passages where Mravinsky would likely have maintained a brisk pace, Zanderling persists with an unrelenting, deliberately slow tempo, revealing this serious work to the audience as if it were a pointillist painting.
