Highly praised by the critic Mitsutoshi Kyo — the following is an extract from his liner note. "The very opening, and the sound of the keyboard instrument, comes as a surprise. The Royal Theme would normally be presented on a harpsichord, but this is not a harpsichord. Nor is it a piano. The recording data identify it as a Flügel-Pianoforte. In fact a harpsichord is also used here as continuo; presumably the harpsichord was felt to be too weak to present so important a theme as a solo. Or perhaps a fortepiano was chosen because that is what Bach is thought to have used in the presence of Frederick the Great — the king owned instruments by the great keyboard builder Silbermann. From there each movement unfolds with meticulous care. It is a performance of Kegel's characteristic, almost grim seriousness. An organ, an instrument rarely called upon in this work, also appears. There is not a trace of the courtly elegance one might expect from music written for a royal household; the way the timbres of the individual instruments collide sounds almost like twentieth-century music. In the penultimate 'Canon a 4', one is startled to hear voices suddenly enter. Most striking of all, however, is that the 'Five Canons on the Royal Theme' are played in Dessau's arrangement and the 'Ricercar a 6' in Webern's. Dessau's version, built around wind and above all brass sonorities, calls to mind a sunset over a soot-stained industrial city; Webern's, by contrast, is delicate, romantic music of subtly shifting colour. The result of mixing these elements is that this fifty-minute Musical Offering becomes a strange temporal experience in which the distant past and the twentieth century stand side by side, or intersect.
