There is an overwhelming grandeur in the elegance and dignity of Hiroshi Wakasugi’s performance of the “Ninth,” in which he pays meticulous attention to every note and every stroke. In the first half of the program, he personally selected and arranged Leopold Mozart’s *Music for Sledding*, a piece rarely performed by a full orchestra, and his excellent taste shines through. Furthermore, his performance of Berlioz’s monumental *Requiem*, in which he stepped in as a substitute for Robert Shaw, is a truly masterful rendition. This work is also one of Wakasugi’s signature pieces, having gained experience performing it with the Staatskapelle Dresden at a memorial concert for the Dresden air raids. Another highlight is the participation of Vinson Cole as soloist—who also delivered a magnificent performance on Seiji Ozawa’s recording—and one can only take one’s hat off to the splendid harmonies of the Shinyukai Choir. Furthermore, I cannot help but feel deep respect for the superb programming of this concert, which commemorated the 100th anniversary of the death of Strauss II, the “Waltz King.” It is a moving concert, filled with ingenious sequencing, masterful selection of pieces, and multifaceted styles of expression. Wakasugi also weaves speeches throughout the program, mentioning Seiji Ozawa from that same year while thoughtfully expressing gratitude and praise for the retiring members. Combined with his personality and sense of humor, this makes for a recording well worth listening to. This collection of renowned performances symbolizes the 1990s, a decade brimming with enthusiasm for classical music, and the sound quality—achieved entirely through digital recording—is excellent. The liner notes were written by Tetsuya Isseki, who knows Wakasugi well. Tobu Shoji Co., Ltd.
