The third release from the acclaimed Carillon Woodwind Quintet! Arvo Pärt’s rare early work is a witty and ambitious piece! The Carillon Quintet is a Danish ensemble formed in 2002. After placing in the Danish Broadcasting Chamber Music Competition in 2004, they have been active primarily in Europe. They have already released two albums, and this latest recording from 2018 is an ambitious work featuring a wide variety of pieces ranging from Mozart to Arvo Pärt. Beginning with a piece from Hindemith’s masterpiece “Chamber Music” series, the album features a wind quintet arrangement of Stravinsky’s Suite No. 2 for Small Orchestra—as lovely as a flower blooming by the roadside—and a wind quintet arrangement of Mozart’s Serenade, offering listeners the chance to fully enjoy this unique ensemble. In particular, Arvo Pärt’s “Little Quintet”—a work rich in whimsy and wit written before he established his “bell-ringing style”—is a must-listen. Although short, it consists of three movements and is a peculiar work that clearly showcases Pärt’s early, fractured, and cynical style, in which tonality, atonality, and clusters vie with one another.
