At 85 Years Old! Performed by France’s Veteran Maestro, Weyenberg! Liszt’s Transcendental Etudes! With Japanese Commentary! Daniel Weyenberg was born in Paris in 1929. His father was Dutch, and his mother was Russian. He won second place at the 1949 Long-Thibaud International Competition; it is worth noting that he achieved this second-place finish amidst formidable rivals, including Aldo Ciccolini (first place), Paul Badura-Skoda (third place), and Pierre Barbizet (fifth place). He is a world-class pianist who has remained active on the front lines for over 60 years, from the 1950s to the present, yet his discography is surprisingly sparse given his talent; in particular, only a handful of CDs have been released (such as his performance of Gershwin with Platel). Now, this great pianist—known only to connoisseurs—has suddenly released a new recording on LYRINX. Moreover, despite being 85 years and seven and a half months old at the time of recording, he deliberately chose to tackle one of the most challenging works of all: Liszt’s Transcendental Etudes. Of course, he doesn’t merely play them well; he draws out a depth from details that ordinary Liszt interpreters tend to overlook—a rich, nuanced Liszt that could only be achieved at the pinnacle of his later years.
