Michele Campanella, one of contemporary Italy’s leading Liszt interpreters (his “Year of Pilgrimage” album, ODRCD391, is currently on sale), has recorded Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition” along with Scriabin’s Piano Sonata No. 3 and Waltz in A-flat major. Campanella is a pianist known for tackling Liszt’s most challenging works with his innate technical mastery, yet without ever showing off his skills—instead, he consistently presents music that prioritizes the inherent lyricism of the pieces. This approach is evident in his performance of “Pictures at an Exhibition” as well. Campanella’s performance of “Pictures at an Exhibition” powerfully conveys the delicate, solitary, and highly sensitive nature of Mussorgsky’s character. At the same time, it makes us realize just how strongly we in the 20th century—and even today—have been influenced by Ravel’s orchestral arrangement, even when listening to the original piano version of “Pictures at an Exhibition.” In the two pieces by Scriabin, he strikes a fine balance between the Romantic exterior—inherited from his predecessors—and a modern inner essence.
