Description:

The Modern Furtwängler: Chivas’ Third Release! Luis de Moura Castro, solo piano Beethoven: Complete Piano Concertos Super Special Price! 3-disc set for ¥2,100 per disc + tax! Since Beethoven himself was a master pianist, all five of his piano concertos are masterpieces among masterpieces—a collection of true gems. Moreover, the orchestra plays an exceptionally important role. A defining feature of most of these works is the orchestral exposition that continues at great length. Piano soloist Luis de Moura Castro was born in Rio de Janeiro (year of birth undisclosed). He began studying piano at age 5, gave his first recital at age 9, and performed with an orchestra at age 17—a true child prodigy. Connoisseurs will know that he has left a vast legacy of masterful recordings on the ENSAYO label. Although he may look like a typical South American gentleman, he is one of Brazil’s leading pianists and piano professors. After being invited to Texas Christian University by the legendary pianist Lily Kraus, he has been based in the United States for over 25 years, teaching at the University of Hartford School of Music, the Juan Pedro Carrero Conservatory of Music (Barcelona), as well as music conservatories in Freiburg and Switzerland, and Brazil. He also held a master class in Japan in 2011. When listening to Castro’s tone—which shines with both brilliance and a subdued depth—the first name that comes to mind is Claudio Arrau. Their robust phrasing and purely Germanic expression are similar, evoking the dignity of an old samurai. Chivas drives the orchestra—arranged in a two-wing formation—at a slightly brisk tempo, solidly bringing 19th-century-style Beethoven to life. Concerto No. 4 was performed on the same day as the previously released “Fate” Symphony. The “Emperor” Concerto was performed on the same day as the previously released Symphony No. 7. The sound quality is also excellent. This is a must-have set. Tobu Land System
