From Eduardo Chibas—known as the “Furtwängler of Venezuela,” whose complete Beethoven recordings are currently receiving rave reviews—comes his Bruckner! Symphony No. 7 marks the Venezuelan Symphony Orchestra’s premiere of this work. The delicate unfolding of the narrative is surprising, yet it possesses a beauty reminiscent of a white lily blooming in a valley. The whispering of the strings makes for a uniquely moving performance that is almost touching. This recording also captures the historic Venezuelan premiere of Symphony No. 8. The performance makes no attempt to hide its soaring excitement. Yet, with the deeply moving, soulful flavor evoked by the extremely slow tempo of the third movement, this is a Bruckner interpretation that exudes a deeply human, earthy quality. The Ninth Symphony is an autobiographical performance that could be described as an outpouring of Chivas’s love for Bruckner and for music itself. The tempo is slightly faster than moderate, and one can even sense a light, brisk pace reminiscent of Schuricht. Both performances are live recordings brimming with a sense of immediacy. They employ a classical orchestral layout, with the violins positioned on both wings to emphasize the counterpoint.
