Venezuela’s Furtwängler Has Arrived! The Venezuelan Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Eduardo Chivas Beethoven: Complete Symphonies! Sometimes, genius emerges from the most unexpected places. The complete Beethoven symphonies, performed by Venezuelan maestro Eduardo Chivas, are now available. Chivas is also renowned as a scholar of Furtwängler; he is very close friends with Barenboim, and his artistic style—old-fashioned and passionate—could be described as a revival of Furtwängler. In this complete set, Symphony No. 1 features an unbelievably slow tempo and immense scale. The “Eroica” makes no attempt to hide the grandeur and passion that could be called a tribute to Furtwängler. Symphonies Nos. 2 and 4 also evoke a sense of nostalgia with their slow tempos. The “Pastoral” is a delightful performance, brimming with rustic charm that feels almost suffocating with the scent of fresh grass. The “Fate” and Symphony No. 7 are masterful performances that could be called the highlights of this complete set. The “Fate” displays a dignified presence reminiscent of an old samurai. Its power is such that the sound seems to surge forth in solid blocks. The finale of Symphony No. 7 is so frenetic that listeners cannot remain composed. Symphony No. 8 is a performance brimming with humor, like the hearty laughter of a heroic figure—a treat I haven’t heard in quite some time. The “Ninth” is performed with a vocal interpretation that replaces “Joy” with “Freiheit” (freedom), a practice not seen since Bernstein. The dignified atmosphere of the first movement, as if awakening from sleep, sends shivers down my spine. Each performance is a live recording brimming with a sense of immediacy, featuring a classical orchestral layout with the violins positioned on both wings to emphasize the counterpoint.
