About Takeo Watanabe The man who wrote the theme songs and background scores everyone knows, from Star of the Giants (Kyojin no Hoshi) to Mobile Suit Gundam: that was the composer Takeo Watanabe (1933-1989). Born the eldest son of the composer Urato Watanabe, he came to music by helping with his father's work. Listening to American jazz on FEN, the US forces radio network, he also mastered the drums and popular music. He then went to Paris to study composition at the highest level before returning to Japan. He wrote background music and theme songs across animation, television drama and much else; handling more than ten programmes a week, he left over ten thousand pieces of music in a little more than two decades. More than thirty years after his death, his music is still known affectionately to fans as the "Nabetake" sound, and is loved around the world. This CD is the long-awaited live album of the remarkable 2017 festival devoted to his music. The 2017 Takeo Watanabe Music Festival Everyone knows the "Nabetake" sound, yet it had virtually never been performed in concert. Orchestra Triptyque set out to change that, working with Takeo Watanabe's family to track down the original scores. The surviving autograph manuscripts were checked against the original recordings, and the festival recreated the sound as it was heard on television. The programme included Star of the Giants, Mobile Suit Gundam, Genius Bakabon (Tensai Bakabon), Heidi, Girl of the Alps and The Dog of Flanders. Music of tremendous style, burned into the memory alongside the images, was brought back to life. Meticulous editing and mixing The aim: a 2020 version of the Nabetake sound, which until now had survived only in recordings more than thirty years old. Recording was handled by Yoshio Ueno, chief recording engineer at Three Shells. The editing was entrusted to Takuya Imahori, who applied the results of research in contemporary and electronic music at IRCAM in Paris and elsewhere. Rather than a straightforward concert document, the editing draws out the studio balance characteristic of music for television and film.
