"Sounds of the Concert Hall," a series launched in May 2006 to showcase the appeal of Japanese composers through wind ensemble music, held its third concert in May 2010 at the former Concert Hall in Ueno Forest. This CD features the live recording of that performance. Once again, the program features a rare and rich selection of works. You cannot truly discuss Japanese composers without listening to this! The repertoire spans a wide range, from pieces composed before World War II in the Showa era to brand-new works by active composers of the Heisei era—all of them energetic masterpieces that inspire the strength to face tomorrow. Yuji Koseki’s refreshing and soothing “Motorboat March”—a long-lost gem; Shiro Fukai’s solemn funeral march “Sending Off the Heroic Spirits,” which left a profound impression on the audience that day; the “Symphonic Suite ‘Tokyo Olympics,’” where you can fully appreciate Maeda’s majestic orchestration; *Elephant*, which overflows with the stylish sensibility of the Melodist Group; the long-overlooked masterpiece march from his later years, *Footsteps of Hope*; Akutagawa’s lively *JAL March*; Masaru Sato’s *Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla*, bursting with big-band energy; the long-awaited wind band premiere of *SF Symphonic Fantasy No. 3*; a new work by Daisuke Ehara—a rising star known for his competition pieces—titled *Flame*; and a new work by contemporary composer Subaru Kawashima, who has received high acclaim not only for the Akutagawa Composition Award but also internationally, titled *Concerto for Wind Band*. This is a feast of Japanese contemporary music curated around three themes: “Program Music of the Pre-war and Wartime Generations,” “Music of the ‘Three-Person Group,’” and “The New Generation and New Arrangements”!
