A Collection of Balsanti’s Masterpieces Performed by Mutsuyuki Motomura The sound of the recorder, pouring down from the heavens and touching the heart Francesco Balsanti [1690–1772] was a wind instrumentalist and composer born in Lucca, Italy, who moved to London in 1714 and enjoyed a successful career there. In the early 18th century, London was experiencing a golden age of the recorder. It was during this period, in 1724, that Balsanti published his first collection of works: *Six Sonatas for Recorder*. Among the many recorder works published in London, this collection of sonatas by Balsanti is brimming with both lyricism—which conveys the joy of recorder music—and precision, and is considered one of the greatest masterpieces of recorder sonatas. The tone produced by Motomura is clear and beautiful. The continuo ensemble is also perfectly assembled, featuring Ageto—a beloved disciple of Leonhardt and Hohoiland—Sakurada, who captivated listeners with his enchanting tone on *Guitars of Serenity* (WAONCD060), and Hirao, a world-renowned gamba player. The crystal-clear recorder and the warm basso continuo weave together an enchanting world.
