A charming musical kaleidoscope featuring a harpsichord tuned differently for each piece “Dreaming Wings: Dream of NIKE” — Masakazu Uehata: A Collection of Harpsichord Works Masakazu Uehata is well known for the opening theme of “Thursday Foreign Film Theater,” as well as music for commercials such as CANON/DIGICDV, VOLVO/V70, Kao/Toilet Magiclin Spray, and Fujicco/Kasupia, and the theme song for NHK General TV’s “Economic Compass.” Furthermore, he composed the music for the commercial (Phiten—currently featuring Naoko Takahashi) in which a woman lifts a clothesline laden with a massive pile of laundry with a mighty heave—an ad often hailed as a masterpiece in its own right. Uehata has now composed a brand-new harpsichord piece specifically for Sakikawa. Uehata’s works are approachable and memorable, yet they demand extraordinary technical skill from the performer. Akiko Sakikawa’s exceptional playing, combined with the tuning adjusted for each piece to bring out the best in the music, creates unforgettable melodies and resonances. This CD is like a treasure chest of songs you’ll want to keep close at hand. The sixth track, “NIKE,” was inspired by Yoshio Yagi’s sculpture “Hatching Nike.” The harpsichord charmingly recreates the sound of Nike (the winged goddess) pecking at her shell from within the egg.
