Schubert: Winterreise Yukari Komagamine (Mezzo-Soprano), Shoko Miyashita (Guitar) This masterful recording presents the complete cycle of Schubert’s late masterpiece, *Winterreise*, performed by a duo of a mezzo-soprano and a guitarist—a combination virtually unparalleled worldwide. After touring the country and performing the works repeatedly, the two artists finally realized this recording following five years of preparation. Yukari Komagamine, one of Sapporo’s leading singers who has long honed her craft—primarily in Nordic art songs—under the guidance of pianist Izumi Tateno and Nordic art song specialist Maria Holopainen, delivers a performance and vocal expression brimming with both power and tenderness. The guitar accompaniment is provided by Shoko Miyashita, one of Japan’s leading female guitarists who has already released four albums and earned high praise from various quarters. She plays a René François Lacôte (French-style) guitar, characterized by a brilliant and light tone that faithfully reproduces the sound of guitars from Schubert’s era. The piece is performed at 417 Hz, a half-step lower than standard pitch. The arrangement for this guitar version was created by Shoko Miyashita herself, based on a recording of the piece performed by guitarist Tadashi Sasaki with a baritone singer, as well as the sheet music for the guitar accompaniment version by Masanobu Nishigaki, and revised in consultation with mezzo-soprano Yukari Komagamine. With a grace unique to a woman, this is a performance where every detail is attended to with care. These two artists love this work dearly. With a blend of romance and passion, they bring to life the 24 songs of *Winterreise*, rich in expression, breadth, and depth.
