Hailed as a genius arranger who could “write different scores with his right and left hands simultaneously,” Norio Maeda—amid the fervor of the student movement in 1968—teamed up with his close allies Takeshi Inomata and Tatsuro Takimoto to tackle his first piano trio work head-on as a pianist. This work combines the refined melodies of the “New Mainstream” movement that led the jazz scene at the time with experimental elements utilizing the prepared piano, as well as an almost eccentric creativity—such as cramming as many as seven microphones inside the piano itself. A major work that deserves a place in the history of Japanese jazz, born from the sophisticated interplay of his exceptional compositional and arranging skills and his sharp instincts as a performer.
