Wolfgang Sawallisch.Nhk Symphony Orchestra

Description:

A commemorative project for “100 Years of the NHK Symphony Orchestra.” Wolfgang Sawallisch made his debut as a guest conductor with the NHK Symphony Orchestra in 1964 to great acclaim and was appointed Honorary Conductor in 1967. He continued to conduct the orchestra until his final visit to Japan in 2004, becoming an indispensable figure in the Japanese music scene. While performances by this duo were widely broadcast on NHK, the only session recordings made for commercial release were those of Beethoven’s Symphonies Nos. 5 and 8, recorded in Niiza in May 1982—the 15th anniversary of his appointment as Honorary Conductor—for RVC, a joint venture between RCA of the U.S. and Victor Japan (DISC 1). Five years later, Brahms’ Symphony No. 1—recorded live by CBS Sony during a regular concert at NHK Hall—is renowned as a passionate and spirited performance. Together with “Death and Transfiguration” by R. Strauss—the only recording in the career of Savallish, a leading authority on the composer—it captures a special sense of elation (DISC 2). Recorded by seasoned engineers Masaki Ohno and Tomoo Suzuki, respectively, these recordings fully capture the clear, Germanic sound characteristic of the NHK Symphony Orchestra at that time. (C)RS
