Formed in 1917 by members of the Budapest State Opera Orchestra, the Budapest String Quartet (BSQ) pursued a distinctive musical career for exactly half a century until it ceased activities in 1967. After numerous changes in membership, the quartet eventually consisted of four Russian-Jewish musicians and, from the 1940s onward, transformed into an international ensemble based in the United States. Recorded between 1958 and 1961, this complete collection of Beethoven’s string quartets represents the BSQ’s third recording—following two previous sessions in SP and monaural formats—and their only stereo recording. It presents one of the definitive interpretations of Beethoven’s string quartets by one of the 20th century’s most renowned quartets. While masterfully expressing Beethoven’s intricate musical structure, the performance reveals the rich essence of the music and its resolute power, capturing the very pinnacle of Beethoven interpretation. Recorded at Columbia’s 30th Street Studio, this exceptionally clear sound—nearly 40 years after its initial CD release—is brought back to life through a state-of-the-art remastering from the original analog master.
