As a "special project commemorating the 30th anniversary of Eugene Ormandy's death," Tower Records will release 10 titles from the vast amount of recordings Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra made for Sony Classical and RCA, including the quintessential stereo recordings. The rich orchestral sound of the Philadelphia Orchestra, with its thick string section at its core, flawless woodwinds, and beautiful brass, has been preserved, and the orchestra's peak of 20th century orchestral art, from the vigorous 1950s and 1960s to the increasingly mature and deep 1970s, is beautifully engraved on these recordings. ■Ormandy was also popular for his "Pieces," a collection of orchestral pieces woven around various themes that showcase the Philadelphia Orchestra to its fullest. This album is a collection of his famous pieces titled "Holiday for Orchestra," in which each section of the orchestra (brass, woodwinds, percussion, and strings) is highlighted, and the pieces are selected so that the listener can enjoy the gorgeous sound of a full orchestra at the end.
