The renowned duo of David Zinman and the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra—who built their global reputation on the success of their “Complete Beethoven Symphonies”—present the first installment of their “Complete Schubert Symphonies,” a major project following their monumental “Complete Mahler Symphonies.” Beginning with the Beethoven Project—which encompassed all of his symphonies, overtures, and concertos—and following the “Complete Orchestral Works of R. Strauss” the “Complete Schumann Symphonies,” and the “Complete Mahler Symphonies,” among others—and now Zinman finally turns his attention to the symphonies of Schubert, who pioneered Romantic music. The first two recordings in this series are Schubert’s early masterpieces, Symphonies Nos. 1 and 2. Having mastered the period performance style and applied its methods to a modern symphony orchestra, Zinman and the Zurich Tonhalle can now be called a “super orchestra” capable of performing works from every era, past and present.
