These two discs mark the conclusion of the “Bruckner: Complete Symphonies” series—comprising 10 titles—that the brilliant American conductor Dennis Russell Davies and the prestigious Austrian orchestra, the Linz Bruckner Orchestra, have been working on for five years since 2003. Beginning with Symphony No. 4 in September 2003, the complete performance and recording of all ten symphonies—carried out at a pace of roughly two symphonies per season—is now complete after five years. The Linz Bruckner Orchestra, which took its name in 1935 in Bruckner’s hometown of Linz, has—as its name suggests—an outstanding tradition of performing Bruckner’s works. D.R. Davis, who became principal conductor in 2002, has devoted his energies to this complete Bruckner symphony cycle in parallel with his recordings of Philip Glass’s new works (Symphonies Nos. 6–8 and the operas *Voyage* and *Kepler*). Symphony No. 5, completed in 1878, is characterized by the incorporation of a large-scale fugue, particularly in the fourth movement, and is often described as “contrapuntal.” It is a grand work that begins with a somber sound and reaches a climax that seems to celebrate God’s overwhelming victory; it is also a challenging piece that was a favorite of conductors such as Günter Wand and Takashi Asahina.
