Description:

Ikuyo Nakamichi, at the height of her career, finally reaches the end of her “Beethoven Journey.” Ikuyo Nakamichi solidified her reputation as one of Japan’s leading interpreters of Beethoven when the final volume of her “Beethoven: Complete Piano Sonatas” series—featuring Sonatas Nos. 30, 31, and 32, completed in 2007—won the 2007 Record Academy Award. As the culmination of Nakamichi’s Beethoven recordings, this release completes her “Complete Piano Concertos” series, following the Piano Concertos No. 3 and No. 5 (“Emperor”), recorded in June 2004 (released on SA-CD hybrid and DVD-Video). The recording features four works: Piano Concertos No. 1, No. 2, the “Rondo in B-flat Major” (originally conceived as the final movement of No. 2 in its early form), and No. 4. Accompanied by the German Chamber Philharmonic, conducted by Järvi—who employs a symmetrical string arrangement alongside period trumpets and timpani to gradually unravel the organic connections between each motif—Nakamichi vividly brings out the distinct character embedded in each work. Symphonies Nos. 1 and 2 are filled with explosive energy reminiscent of Beethoven as a young composer and pianist, while Symphony No. 4 is dominated by an introspective and meditative style marked by maturity, revealing the true nature of the composer who bridged the Classical and Romantic eras.
