Description:
The first Mahler recordings by Boulez. Boulez, who recently completed a recording of Mahler's complete symphonies, has assembled all of his Mahler recordings for Sony Classical in the 1970s in this 2-CD set. The first Mahler recording by Boulez was Mahler's ambitious "Lamentations," composed while at the Vienna Conservatory and submitted for the Beethoven Prize, which was originally recorded and released in two parts as Mahler revised it. The first part of the symphony was released as a 2-LP set. This was just before Mahler's works were intensively performed with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic, and his exquisite and intelligent interpretation shed new light on Mahler's music, which was once thought to be the purview of the Romantic school, and thus attracted a great deal of attention. Lamentations is the only recording of Boulez to date, coupled with the Rückert Lieder, recorded with Yvonne Minton in 1979. Symphony No. 10 - Adagio has been re-released since 1987 in a 3-CD set. It has not been released on an international disc.
