To mark the 100th anniversary of his birth, the first-ever video release of Karajan’s concerts in Japan is finally here! Herbert von Karajan, one of the 20th century’s greatest conductors, would have celebrated his 100th birthday in 2008. This release marks the first-ever commercial release of rare footage from his 1984 concert in Japan with the Berlin Philharmonic at Osaka’s Symphony Hall. Mozart’s Divertimento No. 15 is a masterful performance that showcases the Berlin Philharmonic’s string ensemble at its very best. Music critic Hidekazu Yoshida raved about the performance on the previously released CD, praising the beauty of the fourth movement in particular as “exquisite.” In *Don Juan*, they masterfully paint a magnificent, dazzling orchestral tapestry. The highlight is “The Pines of Rome.” The Berlin Philharmonic’s brass section explodes with sound, overwhelming the listener with a dynamic performance. All of these are rare recordings for which no other video recordings exist. These video recordings capture the pinnacle of artistry by Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic at the height of their careers. Originally announced for release during the LD era but never commercialized, this long-awaited, “phantom” footage is finally seeing the light of day to mark the 100th anniversary of Karajan’s birth.
