Liz Wright, highly acclaimed as a folky jazz and soul singer, presents her first album on Candid, a duo project with her longtime collaborator, keyboardist Kenny Banks Sr. Light’s unique, deep vocals blend beautifully with Banks’s masterful piano and organ playing, showcasing a rich selection of jazz and gospel standards—including improvised blues versions of “Soon I’ll Be Done” and “Amazing Grace.” This is a more spiritual work than ever before. Liz Wright is an iconic soul and jazz singer born in Hirama, Georgia, in 1980. Raised in a pastor’s family, she was exposed to church music from an early age. She joined a gospel choir as a teenager and eventually became drawn to jazz. She studied music in Atlanta and New York, and in 2003 released her debut album, *Salt*, on Verve. Her follow-up, *Dreaming Wide Awake* (2005), incorporated elements of folk and Americana and was highly acclaimed. Since then, she has released albums consistently, including *The Orchard* (2008), *Fellowship* (2010), and—on the Concord label—*Freedom & Surrender* (2015), *Grace* (2017), and *Shadow* (2024). She continues to maintain a strong presence as a roots singer who transcends genres, drawing from jazz, soul, gospel, and folk. In recent years, she has expanded her activities beyond singing to include initiatives rooted in Southern U.S. communities. She has known Kenny Banks—who is also based in Atlanta—since before her debut, and he has appeared on most of her albums.
