Laurie Block, who has released many tribute albums to country bluesmen, has released her latest album, a heartwarming covers album featuring simple acoustic arrangements of classic songs by a variety of female artists across genres! The album features soul numbers by the Staple Singers and Gladys Knight, blues by Etta James and Koko Taylor, and folky numbers by Carole King and Tracy Chapman. Laurie Block was born in 1949 in New York City, New York. Laurie Block was born in Manhattan, New York in 1949, and spent her youth with Stephan Grossman, Jeff Mulder, John Sebastian, and others during the folk and skiffle boom of the 1960s, where she became devoted to country blues. Since then, she has been a leading female acoustic blues guitarist. She is also highly regarded as a singer and songwriter, and released many albums from major labels such as Chrysalis and Rounder in the 70s and 80s, including "Rory Block" in 1975.His 2006 Robert Johnson tribute disc, "Lady & Mr. Johnson," won a Blues Music Award. Since then, he has begun a mentor series for country bluesmen, beginning with Sun House's "Blues Walkin' Like a Man" in 2008, followed by tribute records for Mississippi Fred McDowell in 2011, Mississippi John Hurt in 2013, and Skip James in 2014. Skip James, and other tribute discs. Subsequent releases in the Power Womens of the Blues series included tribute discs to Bessie Smith and others in 2018.
