The NHK Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Hiroshi Wakasugi, performed the Bruckner Cycle "Two Centuries of Catholicism" over three seasons of nine concerts from 1996 to 1998. The program consisted of an ambitious combination of a Bruckner symphony and a work by Messiaen. The original NHK masters were mastered by ALTUS for this release. The performances are so carefully crafted that each piece is truly moving. The SACD version of the Messiaen concerto is also very effective because of its large orchestral ensemble and sensual sound. This is a remarkable disc released on the 30th anniversary of Messiaen's death in 2022. The booklet includes a commentary by Eiko Kasaha, which appeared in the program at the time. It is written in considerable volume and detail, and is very valuable as a document that can be read in Japanese. Reading it while listening to Wakasugi's limpid performance, you will find yourself vividly unraveling Messiaen's complex compositional techniques.It also includes a bilingual translation of the lyrics to "Three Minor Liturgies of the Manifestation of God" with female chorus.
