Maris Jansons, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra
Description:
Leningrad's Last Splendor: Two Whirlwinds in Japan in '86 and '89! The supreme art of Mariss Jansons on SACD single-layer SACD The first SACD release of two performances by Jansons and the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra in Japan: the 1986 program, in which Jansons took the stage in Mravinsky's place and gave the greatest performance of the new era, and the 1989 program, in which he gave an overwhelmingly Russian performance before the orchestra was renamed the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra. The first SACD release of these two performances. It was at these performances in 1986, when he substituted for Mravinsky as the main conductor, that Japanese audiences clearly recognized the presence of Mariss Jansons. The Leningrad Philharmonic's ironclad sound, trained by Mravinsky, and Jansons' beautiful and clear musicality collided head-on to give birth to a rare and breathtaking performance that could only have been heard at this time. The warmth characteristic of Jansons is present, but the intense timpani and the magnificent Achille Rand are of a tremendous intensity. The unusually heavyweight program, with Shostakovich's Fifth in the first half and Tchaikovsky's Fourth to close it out, is also numbing.Three years later, Maris came to Japan with Temirkanov, who became the new music director of the Leningrad Philharmonic, and gave a performance in 1989. The program is a spectacular performance of the "Symphonie fantastique" with Wagner and his specialty, the "Symphonie fantastique" as the main work. The roar of the brass and the convulsive acceleration in the finale are a frenzy that is suitable for a frenzied occasion and will send the audience into a whirlpool of excitement (Symphonie fantastique)" from the commentary by Kenjiro Sakairi, conductor.
