Thanks to new audio recordings, the exquisite nuances of Mravinsky’s “Unfinished Symphony” have been faithfully recreated! Mravinsky & the Leningrad Philharmonic Live in Vienna, 1978 A live recording of the concerts given by Mravinsky and the Leningrad Philharmonic at the Great Hall of the Vienna Musikverein on June 12 and 13, 1978. When the recordings from these performances were previously released on LP and CD, Schubert’s “Unfinished” and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 were generally considered to have fewer audio imperfections compared to Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 and Brahms’ Symphony No. 2, which were recorded on the same day. However, with this new mastering from original source material, their astonishing true nature has been revealed. While there are several recordings of both works by Mravinsky and the Leningrad Philharmonic, this album is truly remarkable. The “Unfinished” Symphony: the tension-filled pianissimo at the beginning of both the first and second movements and their nuances; the terrifying severity as the volume gradually increases in the development section; and the heavenly clarity at the end of the second movement—all of this is a masterpiece of artistry that can only be attributed to the hand of God. Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 is also filled with an eerie tension from the very beginning, with a ferocity in the forte passages that seems almost menacing. While the performance is brimming with a sense of speed throughout, the ensemble’s ability to make even the most intricate passages sound as if they were being played by a single instrument is simply transcendent.
