Her exquisite and enigmatic rendition of Chopin is captured in excellent sound quality, allowing listeners to fully appreciate her musicality. The Nocturnes, in particular, are preserved in stereo and are extremely rare. Her performance of Schumann’s Symphonic Etudes is a weighty and torrential triumph; you’ll be overwhelmed by her powerful, resilient touch. And Albéniz, whose repertoire may seem somewhat unconventional, is presented here with great depth. Born in Marseille to a Russian father and a Romanian mother, Júlia Gyula (1895–1980) was recognized as a child prodigy from an early age. A virtuoso who graduated at the top of her class from the Paris Conservatory, she was also renowned for her stunning beauty—so much so that she was scouted to become a film actress. She performed alongside Enescu, Francescatti, and Szigeti, and even played on Einstein’s violin.
