Description:
The great performance left by the conductor who was tragically killed by a U.S. soldier's bullet. Borcherdt's masterpiece has been out of print for a long time, and many people have been asking for its revival! The Tarra sound source has been remastered and reissued under license from Altus. After the war, Borcherdt replaced Furtwängler as the principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic, but was tragically killed by accidental fire from the U.S. Army on August 23, 1945. The few remaining recordings are rare, and the Berliner Philharmoniker's impassioned performances show the strong mutual trust that existed between the two conductors. The works on this disc are not the biggest, but they are varied enough to provide a good introduction to Borchardt's music. The orchestra is well controlled, with a smart sound, and yet it is able to build up to a big climax with a fine construction. The orchestra's leadership is superb, and the Berliner Philharmoniker's brilliance is on full display. The rarely heard "Stenka Razin" and other works are also excellent, and are masterful performances that make you want to straighten up and listen to them. This is an album in which Borchardt's personality is strongly imprinted. The commentary includes a Japanese translation of the text by Miriam Scherchen and René Tremaine that appeared on the original import disc.The story of Borcherdt's life and the day of the accidental shooting is a valuable resource.
