Description:
Uno Kuniyoshi's praise! Walter's masterpieces that "no other conductor can match" have been remastered and reissued. The "Song of the Earth" and the mysterious "No. 40" that Walther had dreamed of and that even Mr. Kuniyoshi Uno praised so highly are now available in the ALTUS Tara Revival Series! This live recording of Walter & the Vienna Philharmonic's "Ode to the Earth" was made at the Vienna Music Festival on May 17, the day after the famous Decca recording (made on May 15-16, 1952). The Decca recording was made over two days of rehearsals, so it is only by listening to this live recording that one can get a full picture of Walter's masterful performance. The coupling is Mozart's 40th, performed on the same day. These recordings were originally released separately on the Tara label, but have now been combined as a set so that they can be listened to together. This is also a very interesting performance, one day before the Sony release (recorded on May 18, 1952). The sound quality has been further improved by newly remastering. The liner notes include a valuable commentary by Mr. Kuniyoshi Uno! In addition, the CD comes complete with commentary on the songs and bilingual lyrics. -The "52nd Live, which I have dreamed of for 50 years.I was so happy that I cried.", "The vitality is better live.", "Walter is in great form, ... no other conductor can match him.", "I was thrilled to listen to this concert. Walter, Ferrier, and the Vienna Philharmonic. (from Kuniyoshi Uno's commentary on "Songs of the Earth") The performance of Mozart's 40th is quite different from the Sony recording, which was supposed to be recorded one day apart, and Kuniyoshi Uno also describes the 40th as a mystery that "the more I think about it, the more I don't understand it. The liner notes are a must-read. The performance on this disc has a sobbing portamento of the utmost beauty at the beginning, as well as a powerful three-dimensional sound, and the counterpoint between the upper voices and the basses in the development section of the first movement is tremendously exciting.
