Description:
The only recording of Furtwängler's guest appearance with the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra. This is the best Brahms performance in the composer's hometown, Hamburg. The "Diapason d'Or of the Century" was awarded to the Tara label. This is a reissue of the famous disc on the Thala label. The sound quality has been remastered and improved, and even the smallest details have been made easier to hear. This is the only recording of Furtwängler performing with the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra led by Iserstedt when they were guests in Hamburg in 1951. It is considered the pinnacle of Furtwängler's Brahms playing and is famous for winning the "Diapason d'Or of the Century". The Haydn Variations are exceptional for their skillful tonal changes and soft texture. The 7th variation Grazioso, for example, has a delicate, dreamlike floating sensation, and is truly beautiful. In the final Passacaglia, he mobilizes all his emotions to build a magnificent climax. The First Symphony is also a superb performance that many fans consider the best among the several recordings available. The timpani are powerful, and the trumpets break through the heavens at the end of the first movement development section and in the chorale of the last movement coda. The orchestra, with its unique suppleness and softness, responds agilely to the conductor, whose tempi expand and contract like a living creature. The final movement is incomparably dramatic, and the powerful musical development that unfolds one after the other is completely captivating. The orchestra included former Berlin Philharmonic members Erich Lehn (violin) and Artur Trester (cello). The clarity and brilliance of the violin solo in the second movement of the symphony can be attributed to the trust between Furtwängler and the orchestra. It is a pity that there is no recording of the Brahms Double Concerto performed by the two soloists on the same day. King International
