Description:
The 5th installment of the Ono × Tokyo Symphony live series: Prokofiev and Busoni shine with masterful programming that sharply illuminates inner light and shadow! The 5th live recording in the Kazushi Ono & Tokyo Symphony Orchestra series arrives on the ALTUS label. This connoisseur's album features Prokofiev's Symphony No. 6 and Busoni's "Comic Overture"—an ambitious program rarely heard live. Both Prokofiev and Busoni were active in avant-garde composition. Their masterful orchestral handling is evident in the exquisitely refined brushstrokes. This selection perfectly showcases Ono's signature clear, incisive structural vision and the Tokyo Symphony's exceptional ensemble skills. You'll hear magnificent performances that fully convey the works' appeal. Prokofiev's Sixth Symphony, with its shadow of war and complex inner life refracted through a weighty orchestra, is a colossal symphony encompassing destructive impulses, enveloping consoling songs, and intense irony. Ono brilliantly brings to life this monumental work, radiating such energy that it was banned following Zhdanov's criticism. Busoni's "Comic Overture," said to be written in Mozart's style, is a work based on classical sonata form, traversed by pure and flowing melodies. The music unfolds in a highly engaging manner, incorporating the late Romantic flavor of exquisite orchestration and the artistry of bold modulations. <Kazushi Ono> Music Director of the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra and the Brussels Philharmonic; Artistic Director of the New National Theatre, Tokyo Opera. Winner of the 1987 Toscanini International Conducting Competition. Previously held positions include Music Director of the Zagreb Philharmonic, Conductor of the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, Principal Conductor (now Conductor Laureate) of the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, General Music Director of the Baden State Theater Karlsruhe, Music Director of the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées (Royal Belgian Opera), Principal Guest Conductor of the Arturo Toscanini Philharmonic, Principal Conductor of the Opéra National de Lyon, and Music Director of the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra. Recipient of numerous awards and honors including the Grand Prix de la Critique Musicale Française, Officer of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, the City of Lyon Special Medal, and the Asahi Prize. He is a Person of Cultural Merit. In 2017, the Opéra National de Lyon, led by Kazushi Ono for nine years, was named "Best Opera House 2017" at the International Opera Awards. In 2019 and 2021, he conducted Turandot and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg as part of an international project he conceived himself; both became monumental performances and received high acclaim. Since 2019, the New National Theatre has premiered Akira Nishimura's "The Story of Shion," Dai Fujikura's "Dream of Armageddon," and Keiichiro Shibuya's "Super Angel," while also staging a succession of acclaimed productions including "Die Walküre," "Carmen," "Pelléas et Mélisande," "Boris Godunov," "La Bohème," and "Simon Boccanegra." In 2023, he conducted the Orchestre de Paris in a concert performance of the film score for Metropolis by composer Martin Matalon, successfully leading its French premiere. In March 2024, he conducted Tristan und Isolde at the New National Theatre to critical acclaim. Also in March 2024, the New National Theatre announced his reappointment as Artistic Director of Opera (September 2026–August 2030), following his current term (September 2018–August 2026).
