Description:

Surprise and Excitement: A Century-Defining Discovery! Asahina's Mahler, Official Recordings Released for the First Time Ever! And Symphony No. 5 Itself Is Being Released on Disc for the Very First Time!! The legendary conductor Takashi Asahina devoted tremendous effort to Mahler performances. Records exist of him performing Symphonies Nos. 2 through 9 and "Das Lied von der Erde," and these have been released on disc by multiple labels. However, the whereabouts of a recording of the Fifth Symphony remained unknown for a long time, making it impossible to hear it on disc. Now, it finally emerges. This is the complete, first-ever live recording of the Fifth Symphony, performed during the Tokyo concert of the Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra in 1980. Between 1979 and 1981, Asahina tackled Mahler's Symphonies Nos. 5, 6, and 7 in one go. These were works rarely heard live at the time, making the audience's fervor easy to imagine. This Fifth Symphony is a truly grand performance, quintessentially Asahina: bold yet boasting a solid structural power, exploding with fiery bravado. The orchestra's concentration is high, delivering a passionate performance that revives the fresh surprise and emotion of hearing this work for the first time. The audio source used for this CD release is the official open-reel tape recorded by engineer Yoshio Hirasawa, who captured numerous Asahina concert performances and also recorded his performance at St. Florian. While the reasons for its previous unreleased status are detailed in the booklet, we have meticulously digitized and mastered this material for commercial release. This allows everyone to enjoy Asahina's long-awaited Mahler Symphony No. 5 in the finest possible condition. The CD jacket design reproduces the original program from that era. The booklet also includes a reprint of the program's member list, sure to delight enthusiasts. ALTUS
