It was that incredible. Mravinsky’s 1982 recording of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 8 has been remastered from audio sources in the widow’s collection. It has finally revealed its true form. A groundbreaking release. The 1982 recording of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 8 by Mravinsky and the Leningrad Philharmonic had long been regarded as an unparalleled masterpiece, standing alone as a special recording that no other could rival. However, from the time of its initial release, issues such as unstable pitch due to pitch anomalies and a tendency to speed up the tempo had been pointed out. Nevertheless, the sheer brilliance of the performance has always outweighed these problems, allowing it to remain the undisputed definitive recording. Subsequently, RussianDisc released a pitch-corrected version, but the sound quality was lackluster and failed to satisfy fans. Regis also released a pitch-corrected version, but—perhaps due to noise reduction—it gave the impression that the raw, visceral intensity had been diminished, and this, too, was unsatisfactory. Now, a disc has finally arrived that resolves these issues. Altus has meticulously mastered the recording from the widow’s collection; in addition to a vividness that surpasses even the Philips release, the corrected pitch enhances the performance’s intensity, reviving a performance of such a caliber that it seems almost superhuman. Although it is the same performance, the total running time is 3 minutes longer—with the first movement alone extending by 1 minute and 15 seconds. As a result, the center of gravity has shifted even lower, and the intensity and sheer magnitude of the music come across with terrifying force. Furthermore, the ferocious tempo and immense energy in the third movement are so intense that one fears they might shatter the concert hall. And the closing section is filled with a terrifying sense of tension. While the 1982 recording has always been in a class of its own, this Altus release has finally succeeded in recreating a truly miraculous performance. In any case, from the very first note, you’ll be paralyzed, unable to move. Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 8 was composed in 1943 and dedicated to Mravinsky. It received its world premiere on November 3 of that same year, performed by the Soviet State Symphony Orchestra under Mravinsky’s baton. Mravinsky performed the work 36 times during his lifetime, and six recordings of it survive.
