★ Acclaimed pianist Yoshishige Tanaka records Beethoven’s Piano Concertos No. 3 and No. 5 in chamber music arrangements! This recording stems from a concert series featuring chamber music arrangements of Beethoven’s complete piano concertos, which Yoshishige Tanaka organized from 2010 to 2011. For the No. 3 and No. 5 (“Emperor”) concertos included here, he personally commissioned Japanese composers to create the arrangements. For the arrangements, a detailed analysis of the original scores was conducted, with the conditions that Beethoven’s spirit be respected and that the solo piano parts remain unaltered. The instrumentation for this recording—piano, two violins, viola, cello, and double bass—brilliantly recreates the original orchestration. The ensemble features the Quartet Excelsior—a young string quartet renowned for both its popularity and artistic merit—along with Koji Akaike on double bass.
