The liner notes include "For Mr. Matacic's last visit to Japan" by conductor Yukio Kitahara, the special envoy who made Lovro von Matacic's last performance with the NHK Symphony Orchestra in 1984 possible. Bruckner expert Matacic's bold Fifth Symphony: "Bruckner's music is like Gothic architecture; the harmony of the whole is important, and no one part should protrude. The most important thing to keep in mind when playing Bruckner is to restrain the protrusion and make the whole sound in beautiful harmony.(From Yukio Kitahara's liner note "For Dr. Matacic's last visit to Japan") Matacic's Bruckner No. 5 is well known from his recordings with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra (1970) and the Orchestre National de France (1979). As if to corroborate the above-mentioned episode, the organ-like sound played by the N Orchestra under the master's baton is also very appealing. The music is very unique, but very persuasive.
