Mahler’s “Resurrection”—A Bold Concept Zagrosek & the Stuttgart State Opera A rare new recording by the renowned German maestro Zagrosek, who was named Conductor of the Year by the critics’ panel of *Offenwelt* magazine in 1997 and 1999. A new recording has been released by the accomplished German conductor Lothar Zagrosek (1942–), Music Director of the Stuttgart State Opera. And it features Mahler’s “Resurrection,” a highly anticipated work. The Stuttgart State Opera Orchestra, which demonstrated its high caliber in the production of *The Ring of the Nibelung* (already released on DVD by TDK Core)—a production that attracted attention for its bold interpretive direction—fully showcases its excellent functionality in this Mahler masterpiece. Recorded live on July 11 and 12, 2004, at the Liederhalle in Stuttgart. Of particular note is the use of a “two-wing double bass” arrangement—with the double basses positioned on either side of the stage—as well as the stunning recording of the bass drum. The power of the deep bass hitting the listener head-on is particularly effective in this “Resurrection.” Looking at the entire work, its solid structural integrity is truly impressive; in the final movement, in particular, the exquisitely and meticulously crafted “Resurrection Hymn”—which culminates in a succession of cataclysmic moments (such as the intense percussion “molto crescendo” lasting 30 seconds starting at 10 minutes and 10 seconds!) —the exquisitely and meticulously crafted “Hymn of Resurrection” that emerges at the end, and the overwhelming grand finale bridged by tenacious perseverance—all come together to create a truly magnificent performance. Furthermore, Zagrosek is scheduled to succeed Inbal as principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic beginning in the 2006–2007 season; as a highly accomplished artist with a deep understanding of both opera and contemporary music, his presence is sure to grow ever more prominent.
