Neil Young in 1989 was a precursor to the coming explosion of the 90's. In 1988, he fulfilled his promise to David Crosby and released his first album as CSN&Y in a long time, but did not tour with CSN&Y. In 1989, he did not tour with CSN&Y, but did several mini-tours, and in between, released the message album Freedom (1989). In '89, he did not tour with CSN&Y, but instead did several mini-tours and, in between, released Freedom (1989), an album with a strong message. Then, following "Ragged Glory" with Crazy Horse, the band blasted out on tour with Sonic Youth and Social Distortion, and entered their second golden age as the godfathers of grunge. The song "Rockin' In The Free World" was probably the catalyst for this trend. A song with a strong message criticizing the policies of his father Bush, it reached No. 2 on the mainstream rock charts, a rarity for Young, who was never much of a singles hit. Although this show was acoustic, the message in the song came through rather clearly, and you could sense Young's strong will in performing the song twice.This is the kind of show that shows that the band was quick to sense the coming of the era of raw emotion with a low-fi sound, from the glittering 80s to the 90s.
