Description:
The third album released in 2020 by Mei Ding, who has attracted a great deal of attention in the electronic - ambient scene in Japan and abroad! This is the final chapter of a trilogy depicting "LOST JAPANESE MOOD" following the previous two albums "Kwaidan" and "Komachi". (Reprinted in 2024) His debut album "Kwaidan" was selected as one of the "Best Experimental Albums" by Pitchfork in 2018, and his second album "Komachi" released the following year, 2019, also won high acclaim both in Japan and abroad. The following year, his second album "Komachi" was also highly acclaimed both in Japan and abroad. Following his previous two albums, "Kwaidan" and "Komachi," "Kofu" once again focuses on old Japanese culture, completing a trilogy that depicts a "lost Japanese mood" under the theme of "satire on the old Japanese aesthetic.Piano and Japanese instrumental sounds, field recordings, and fragments of warabeuta and folk songs are combined with Mei Ding's rare sensitivity accompanied by a playful spirit to create a nostalgic and fantastic soundscape that connects the imaginary past and present. In "Hanakai I" (M-3) and "Hanakai II" (M-8), which are a series of pieces in the series, Mei Ding constructs a sound with an unprecedented shimmering tension with a galloping hip-hop rhythm that is processed from old drums and metal sounds. Furthermore, the use of voice samples that have been deconstructed until they make no sense, empathizes with Hayao Miyazaki's concept that "there are moments in the world when we should not think of things in terms of logic," and creates something else that transcends words. Also, "Wife" (M-6), dedicated to working-class women who have long suffered in patriarchal Japanese society, and "Oiran" (M-3, 8), about prostitutes working in harsh working conditions where syphilis is prevalent, take women who had no freedom in the old Japanese society and use an approach similar to that of Kenji Mizoguchi's The film depicts the unimaginable pain of these women with tenderness. With this work, Mei Ding bids farewell to his exploration of Japan's forgotten cultural past, but "Kofu" is a piece of history completely divorced from the rest of the world that can be passed on to listeners in Japan and abroad.
